Primers’ Orientation Camp

On 10 and 11 February, the After a simple yet delicious meal, we discussed about the roles and
Senior Officers including myself, expectations of a Primer. OCT Louis Lee, who was once a Primer,
organized an Orientation Camp reminisced his BB journey where his motivation had changed from
for the incoming Primers who had friendship with Boys to serving them wholeheartedly now. He also
just graduated from Secondary shared about his experience in youth work, especially character
School. We also invited Officers transformation in the lives of youths. I believe that this camp is
and current Primers to join us for a good start for the incoming Primers to integrate well into the
a time of fellowship and bonding. Company as partners with the Officers in running the Company.
The objective of the camp was to
help our new Primers understand
the working relationships between
Officers and Primers and to know
the expectations of a Primer at both
Company and national levels.
We started off with ice-breaker
games followed by outdoor
cooking. In an attempt to infuse
some challenge, we adopted the
“kampong style” of cooking, with
woks and charcoal thrown into
the works. It created some anxiety
within our Primers and also our
Officers, who wondered if the food
would be edible! Ms Shu Chan,
wife of LTA John Tan, was brought
in share her expertise in cooking
and experience in managing a
traditional kitchen in their family
restaurant. She was pleasantly
surprised that our Primers had
delegated the chores quickly and
learnt how to work around the
kitchen with delineated areas for
the charcoal stoves with woks. She
was also pleased to learn that some
Primers are now more willing to
help their families at home in the
kitchen!
