West 2 Cluster Drill Competition

As Boys, we use to attend events rather than organize and run them.  It is so convenient to leave it all to the Officers whom you think know it all, isn’t it? A group of Primers from the W2 cluster took on the challenge to organize the West 2 Cluster Drill Competition.

It is also the first cluster Drill Competition to be held in BB Singapore. Now how about that for a Trailblazer?

We hear from CLT Goh Wei Tat from 54th Singapore Company, who had a wonderful experience organising this event.

West 2 Cluster Drill Competition 2008

By Parade Square I/C – CLT Goh Wei Tat – 54th Singapore Company

The Competition was held on 30th Aug 08 and it was the first cluster drill competition since I first joined The Boys’ Brigade in 2002.  All of us were excited about it as we do not know what a drill competition is like. We were approached by our Captains and were told that the Primers would be the ones doing the planning and execution on the actual day.

An on-site meeting was held on 16th Aug 08 in Dunearn Secondary School, which was the school hosting the event. Most of the Primers turned up for the meeting and there was a briefing of what we are supposed to do by LTA Edward Tan of 70th Coy and LTA Sammy Leong of 54th Coy.  Different roles and responsibilities were assigned on that day so that all the Primers would have a different leadership role to play. I was excited to be assigned the role of the Parade Square IC as I was supposed to plan where the different companies would be seated, and the fall-in positions on the actual day. I was also required to assign places for the different Companies to put up their banners. And last, but not least, I was to make sure that everything run smoothly on the parade square on the event day.

On the actual day, 30th  Aug 08, the Primers were required to assemble at 7.30am and after a short briefing, all of us proceeded to perform our jobs. The drill competition was carried out smoothly within the time frame given, due to good weather and the good job done by the various Primers.

I felt that the drill competition was a good experience for all of us.  I believe that our Boys had worked very hard for this competition and their drill standards had definitely improved a lot. They have also learnt the importance of teamwork in drill. It was also a good experience for the Primers, as we have not been through a drill competition before. I think that it would be good if there was a drill competition every year, so that different Companies could gauge their standards.
